Photo of the Day, February 16, 2009

This portrait, full of attitude, was taken in the comfort of the client's home. I rarely do studio style photo shoots with staged environments. Since most of my clients are "everyday people", not models, it helps greatly to shoot in surroundings in which they are most comfortable rather than under the intimidating, sterile glow of studio lights. Shooting on location--in one's home, near a favorite landmark or park, with beloved pets, etc--adds a layer of detail and personality that cannot be created in a studio.

Sometimes something as simple as a subtle color adjustment can completely change the feel of an image. The blue-green cast in this image, along with her powerful glare, give the image more edge than if I had left it in its original color (a warmer, more welcoming yellow tone). It's as if this image could have been taken in a luxurious mental hospital, rather than on a comfy living room chaise. One of the jobs of a Photographer is to direct multiple components during a shoot and manipulate various elements in post-production to create provocative images. I especially enjoy doing this in my unique portraits.

I look forwarding to collaborating with some of YOU on a creative, funky portrait!

Best,
Brigette Sullivan
