Photo of the Day, March 23, 2009

There is no denying the beauty I see in the colors, smells, sight, and anticipation of a gourmet meal. Some people call photos like this "food porn". We enjoy the glisten of a well-oiled chop, the bright green of fresh herbs, the look of a superior cut of meat.

The site of raw meat in not for everyone. But I see it as something more than that. Such images remind me of the centuries-old food still life Dutch painitings that glorified and immortalized food and drink. All foods should be savored, appreciated, indulged in moderation. It is a modest luxury we all deserve in our lives. To me, capturing the sensual beauty of a finely marbled and marinated lamb loin is my way of giving thanks to the source of my food and showing great admiration for all our great earth produces for us.

One of these days, I would LOVE to do the photography for an innovative, unique cookbook. I'd like to do photography in a style that looks less art directed and stylized, and looks more attainable to the average hobbyist cook.

Bon apetite!
