I did manage to step out on to The Ledge a couple of times myself, even sitting long enough for a photo (just to prove to my mom I did it). But it was much more fun to watch carefree kids and crazy teens enjoying the view. If you want to visit this spectacular attraction, it will set you back about fifteen bucks and a couple of hours in line. I recommend going on a weekday when it's less crowded and you can spend more time on The Ledge. But even on a busy weekend, there are great 360-degree views throughout the floor and lots of Chicago history tid bits to read on the walls. Also, there are no money back guarantees for poor weather/visibility.
It is a little tricky getting the right lighting and no flash reflection on The Ledge and good color/contrast in the background. So, even if your own point-and-shoot doesn't capture a great picture, you get a photo taken by the staff at the specially set up Ledge/photo station.
Do it if you dare!
