Photo of the Day, November 26, 2008

Although the exact origins of the Chicago Dog are not documented, Vienna Beef of Chicago claims the "Chicago-style" hot dog was invented by two European immigrants at the Chicago World's Fair and Columbian Exhibition in 1893. One thing is for certain: Never put ketchup on it! *Children under the age of ten may be exempt from this rule.*

The "dawg" has a special place in the hearts of most Chicagoans. It means so much to our local culture, that it's not uncommon to see people with Chicago Dog tattoos--complete with sport peppers and poppy seeds. While I generally do not eat meat, this little guy is an exception. Red hots somehow make me feel like I am a part of Chi-town's living history. This particular fella was served up by Jeff's Red Hots on Cicero Avenue. I just love their self-efacing hot dog statue wrapped in an American flag, pouring ketchup on his own head (clearly HE'S not a Chicago Dog!).

I chose to "age" this photo by making it a timless black and white and adding a grungy finish. To me, it looks like this beloved photo has been in the pocket of a proud meat packer from the Southside for decades.

This would make an excellent print for your kitchen or dining room! :o)
