Photo of the Day, April 22, 2009

In honor of Earth Day, these images seem appropriate. I awoke from a morning snooze on my couch a few weeks ago to the clatter of a city truck outside my window. At first, I was afraid I had forgotten it was street cleaning day and I was about to get a ticket for not moving my car! When I sprung to the window to see if I needed to throw on shoes and move the Jeep in time to avoid a parking ticket, I was instead treat to a lovely sight.... The city of Chicago was dropping off brand new blue recycle bins to homeowners on my block.

Chicago does not currently have a city-funded recycling program that's integrated with home garbage pick-up. I don't know if this is a trial run in my neighborhood or if they were attempting to slap lipstick on a pig for visiting Olympic committee members, or what. Whatever the reason, I think it's quite exciting and encouraging. I am so glad I got a few photos of the blue bins in the front yards (for a more picturesque shot) before they were dragged to dingy back alleys. But I have shots of that too.

The second picture is a photo illustrating recycling in the home. It does not have to be a heaping dirty mess of garbage festering in one's kitchen. If you wash each item clean of food and keep items sorted, it makes taking them to the recycle center a snap every few weeks. I just adore the snazzy, colorful (And reusable!) totes as well. I got them at Target.

If you're not aware, I also shoot stock photography. It may not seem as exciting as wedding photo assignments or as glamorous as portrait sessions. But there is definitely a need and use for photos of garbage cans, recycling bins, and other such environmental issues (among thousands of other topics). For example, photos like these may be used in an educational pamphlet or textbook to illustrate examples of recycling.

Happy Earth Day 2009!!
Brigette
