It amazes me that something so troubled and decayed can sometimes look elegant, interesting, and beautiful.
The Cabrini Green housing projects in the River West area of Chicago have been doomed for years. The crime-riddled projects have been quickly disappearing in recent years to make way for mixed-income condominiums and luxury townhouses.
The demise of Cabrini Green brings about mixed feelings. Once home to the highest concentration of violent crimes in Chicago, it seems a relief that the poor construct, health hazards, gangs, and urban decay are finally being addressed. However, its tenants are being displaced to suburbs and other dying projects around the city and even moved to the deteriorated town of Gary, IN so high-end living can be built in its place. Part of Chicago's culture is being wiped out in the name of commerce.
I was lucky enough to wander by this demolition site before the last of Cabrini's buildings disappear. As scary as the place can seem to some, I see the value of Cabrini Green as a part of Chicago's rich cultural tapestry. It is important as a Photographer to document our living landscapes--the good, the bad, the ugly, the unjust, the beautiful, the hopeful, and the ever-changing. I hope to make it back to this area to capture the beauty of some of the remaining residents, their homes, and the changing face of our citiy's cultural landscape.
