Photo of the Day, May 30, 2009

Possibly the best way to commute in Chicago: bicycle! It's healthy, pollutant -free, and doesn't cost a penny (except the occasional tire repair). Chicago has hundred of miles of dedicated bike paths and bike lanes on roads shared with motor vehicles. I love seeing so many people commuting to work and trekking around our great city, especially when the weather warms a bit.

I wish bicyclists and drivers had a better understanding and consideration for each other though. I know drivers often do not see bikers and sometimes drive too close to them on shared roads.
But I also see plenty of cyclists blatantly breaking the rules of the road (as if being green or frugal gives them permission to be self-righteous and rebellious). You bad kids. On my own ride today, I was reminded that not all neighborhoods and roads are conducive to bike riding and it is my job as a cyclist to know where to ride, and how to stay safe without losing my sanity.

I admire my friends who advocate bike riding in Chicago and groups like Critical Mass. And I especially admire people who advocate bike safety, community outreach, and education. The ones who bundle up and even commute via bike in winter--even in a foot of snow--are way cool in my book! (No pun intended.)

I dig this photo. It seems to capture the spirit of bike commuting in an urban landscape. It looks fresh, motivational, and fast. Maybe I should write Mayor Daley's "Bike Chicago" council about using my bike commuter photos for their campaigns. Safe and happy biking to you this summer!
