Photo of the Day, June 4, 2009

DJM Trio is a great group of musicians and friends in the Chicago area. I'm no music critic, and won't even attempt to try and explain their sound. But they are great! And if you like rockabilly, jazz, new funk, math rock, or have more than ten functioning brain cells, you'll dig they guys. The instrument you see is a Chapman Stick--a snazzy, melodic, guitar-like instrument invented in America in the 1970's. Matt Tate plays it with passion and great skill.

I do not specialize in live band photography. In fact, I'd say it's my biggest weakness as a Photographer (other than having command over studio flash units). Mainly, I find it difficult to capture the right lighting, color, mood, and feel of a live performance in small venues with shabby lighting that doesn't encourage quality photography. Using a flash usually ruins the natural, colorful look of club gigs. And those pesky red lights often create flat tones with digital photography. But I love a challenge and opportunities to learn and better my craft. So, I did my best to rise to the occassion for this shoot.

Luckily, I have fast, versatile lenses. And my Nikon D700 can shoot up to 20,000 ISO. That's right, I said one-twenty thousandth of a second! I tried shooting a few of these pics at 500 ISO hoping to avoid too much noise/grain, then 1600, then figured "what the heck" and then went all the way up to 10,000 ISO for some of the shots. The noise is manageable if the exposure's okay. Hip-hip-hooray for technology.
