Outer Focus Photos: Photo of the Day June 16, 2009

These two little critters were spotted at McKinley Park on Chicago's southwest side. The lagoon there is a wonderful place to fish, stroll, barbecue, bird watch, and even people watch.

It took me about eight tries to finally photograph the dragonfly. You sort of have to focus and snap the picture before you think it is about to take off. They are not patient models. I think I got an okay shot here. The crayfish was the catch of a local fisherman at one of the piers in the park. This green crustacean lost the fight with a fishing hook and lost its left pinching claw in the battle as well. I have a feeling it ended up as some one's appetizer...

If you are looking for an inexpensive, family-friendly way to spend a Saturday or Sunday, look up the hundreds of Chicago parks, lagoons, and gardens to find one right for you. They are always free. Just pack a picnic, maybe a fishing pole, a good book, and lots of sunblock. Have a blast making memories in the shade of a warm Chicago summer day. And be sure to bring your camera in case you spot so cool creepy crawlies too!

Happy hunting,
Brigette
