Outer Focus Photos: Photo of the Day June 24, 2009

These curious young guys wer part of a science class field trip that participated in the National Geographic BioBlitz held at the Indiana Dunes State Park and National Lakeshore. A park ranger retreived all sorts of critters and plantlife from a pond for the students to sift through and identify, using an assortment of tools to clean, view, and note the specimens. As you can see from the wet sweatshirt and raincoat, it was a super soggy day--not easy for a Photographer to keep her equipment dry!

This Indiana Dunes State Park BioBlitz was a 24-hour event in which teams of scientists, volunteers, and community members joined forces to find, identify, and learn about as many local plant and animal species as possible. Bioblitzes are a way for communities, students, and scientists to get hands-on experiences and field research to better understand the nature in their own backyards and find way to better appreciate and protect it. Scientists identified over 1,200 species of plants and wildlife at the BioBlitz! And I figured there were maybe a few dozen...

Photographing events like this are a great way for me to add to my portfolio of editorial and educational stock photography as well shed light on our environment.

Best,
Brigette
