If you ever get the chance to see The Squirm Burpee Circus, I highly recommend it! It is so adorable in its family-friendly humor and circus tricks, yet also appeals to offbeat adult sensibilities. If you are a fan of vintage, burlesque, or vaudeville entertainment, you will definitely love this show. There is a classic love story, great clown shtick, a fiendish villain, swing dancing, and laughs abound. Oh, and they juggle real chainsaws, bowling balls, and eggs! I was too scared of a rogue chainsaw to photograph it in midair.
This delicious act was part of the fantastic Tour de Fat traveling bicycle festival which promotes bike transportation, social and community awareness, and raises funds for local bicycle shops. The Chicago stop of Tour de Fat was held in Palmer Square Park and raised over $20,000 for West Town Bikes, which provides a variety of community services and youth programs revolving around bicycles.
Events like this are a win-win. There is family entertainment, beer drinking that raises funds for community programs, promotion of eco-friendly efforts, and of course a beautiful, weekend summer day in a wonderful Chicago neighborhood to take it all in!
