Outer Focus Photos: Photo of the Day July 9, 2009

This is a bit like a nostalgic, old-timey view of West Beach at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore State Park. It was taken in May of this year, but the lack of people and human details makes it seem rather timeless. I suppose the sepia tone and soft focus help too. The stark look of the sand dunes almost look like snow and give the photo an even colder feel. IT was indeed a very bone chilling spring day.

This image was snapped during my photo efforts at the National Geographic Indiana Dunes BioBlitz. This Indiana Dunes State Park BioBlitz was a 24-hour event in which teams of scientists, volunteers, and community members joined forces to find, identify, and learn about as many local plant and animal species as possible. Bioblitzes are a way for communities, students, and scientists to get hands-on experiences and field research to better understand the nature in their own backyards and find way to better appreciate and protect it.

If you have a free day this summer, I highly encourage you to visit the Indiana Dunes. Of course, there are beaches galore scattered along the entire Indiana/Lake Michigan area. But there are also camping grounds, plenty of hiking trails, and a great visitors center with year-round learning programs and events. Take your bug spray, sunblock, and some extra drinking water. Enjoy your summer outdoors!

Best,
Brigette
