Outer Focus Photos: Photo of the Day June 15, 2009

Ahhh, sunshine! And hooray for green technology! These solar panels reside on the grounds of the North Park Village senior living center and are the largest solar project funded by the city of Chicago. The compound parabolic concentrating panels absorb sunlight to heat hot water for residents, with an estimated savings of $275,000 over the next 10-15 years. Ahhh, nerd talk!

This is just one example of the many eco-friendly initiatives the city of Chicago has put in place. While we may still have a ways to go to be considered one of the top "greenest" cities in the U.S., projects like this are a great start. I just wish it didn't cost so much to implement cleaner, longer lasting technologies. Although, if you do enough homework, you may be able to find grants, refunds, and tax breaks for installing various green tech features in your own home.

The city hall rooftop is on my "to do" list of places to photograph. I am just waiting for special access from the powers that be.
If you know of any great, photogenic examples of "greening" in Chicago, I would love to hear from you!

Best,
Brigette
