Outer Focus Photos: Photo of the Day July 6, 2009

This is the result of my first serious effort to photograph fireworks. I wanted my image to be something more than just a close-up of any pretty explosive you might see. I wanted to give it a sense of time and place. What better place that the beautiful skyline of sweet home Chicago?

It is as difficult as I thought it would be to photograph fireworks. It requires all manual camera settings and focus, a very steady

tripod (a remote shutter release would be ideal too), and a great location and view. I wouldn't dare ask an eco-friendly citizen in a crowd of one million to move out of my shot, so I actually edited his big bicycle helmet from the foreground of the shot. In the world of ethical and true photojournalism, this would be a no-no. But I'm not reporting news, just sharing a pretty picture.

I hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th celebrating America's 233rd year of independence, and eating yummy barbecue with great friends and family.

Cheers,
Brigette
